Men’s Psychology

Traditional socialization has made life more difficult for both girls and boys. Sending healthier messages to girls has increased women’s power in society and their relationships, business opportunities, their safety in the world, and decreased self-criticism regarding their appearance. More recently, boys are being encouraged to find healthy outlets for their feelings, and men are being encouraged to take better care of their physical and emotional needs. There are many positives of traditional masculinity, but it is shaming when a tearful boy is told “big boys don’t cry” and men are told to “man up,” and it encourages unhealthy ways to deal with their emotions.Dr. Lazar supports the Movember reminder for men to seek an annual physical, and seek counseling when stressed out. He encourages men to nurture healthy friendships and helps couples reduce the friction often seen in heterosexual relationships.”It’s a Man’s World” is an article by Dr. Lazar, published in California Psychologist – Nov. 2001

ADHD

Dr. Lazar is open about having ADHD and helps parents and adults cope with the challenges that this can involve. Research shows that ADHD can continue into adulthood, and can impact one’s school/job and social success, which can result in underachieving, negative feedback from others, and increased self-criticism.

Self-Improvement

No one is perfect, and we can all improve how we handle the stress in our lives. Taking care of our physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual well-being can have a big impact on our happiness, calmness, and self-compassion. If you are struggling, in addition to seeking support from your friends and/or relatives, consider seeking the support of a mental health professional. The attached handouts may also be helpful.
